HOUSTON -

Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting at a motel in southwest Houston.

Police said officers responded to a 911 call reporting a robbery at the Plainfield Inn around 7 a.m. Monday in the 9600 block of Plainfield near Bissonnet.

The caller said a suspect was attempting to rob a motel resident and was physically assaulting him.

Police said the manager of the motel stepped in and was able to scare him off.

When officers arrived, they found the man at the end of the block making boxing moves in the middle of the street where he was alone.

According to detectives, the officer approached the man and tried to get him to calm down. As the man was being put in handcuffs, he took off running.

Investigators said the suspect refused the officer’s commands to get on the ground and made several threats at the officer. During the confrontation, detectives said the suspect charged at the officer several times. The officer – in fear for his life – discharged his duty weapon, police said.

The man died at the scene.

Police said the man was wearing baggy clothes, and the officer involved did not know if he had a weapon.

Officials have not said if the man was armed.
