Authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting after a warrant was issued at a northeast Harris County home.

It happened around 6 a.m. Wednesday in the 1600 block of Birchwood.

Authorities said a Houston police narcotics team was serving a warrant at the home when they called in the SWAT team.

"The reason why the HPD SWAT team was here, the individual was known to have multiple weapons and narcotics on the scene, so obviously for their safety, they brought in the SWAT team," said Harris County Sheriff’s Office PIO Thomas Gilliland.

Officers made themselves known to the suspect inside the home.

"Lights and sirens were on, they were on the loud speaker announcing who they were and giving commands at that point," Gilliland said.

According to officials, two teams surrounded the house with one in front and one on the side. The team on the side made entry into the home through a window.

"The entry team that were breaching a window, encountered a male suspect who immediately retrieved a handgun -- pointing it at officers,” Gilliland said. “Officers then discharged their weapon at this individual striking him."

The suspect, who is described by officials as a middle-aged Hispanic man, was transported to Ben Taub Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The sheriff’s office said no officers were hurt.
