Police said Jones stopped traffic to save the cat. The cat was handed over to animal control, who returned him to the owner.

The owner, Diwanna Zapalac, told police she'd been looking all over for her cat. When it was returned, she wrote to the department to express her gratitude.

"Words cannot describe how grateful I am for this wonderful, caring officer and his kind deed!" said Zapalac. "After a bath and his arthritis medication, he has been resting all day. Safe, warm and home again, all because someone did care."

La Porte police said this is an excellent example of community service, and is one of many daily examples of how no task is insignificant.
