According to Houston police, an intoxicated driver was traveling inbound on the main lanes of the freeway when the driver's vehicle ran out of gas and stalled in the middle of the road.

Another car stopped behind him to help, causing a pickup truck driver to slam on his breaks in order to avoid both cars.

A HPD officer behind the pickup truck could not stop in time and slammed into the side of the pickup.

She then swerved and sideswiped a wrecker that was stopped in front of all the cars.

The officer said the pickup had black bars over its break lights, making it difficult for her to see he was stopping.

Police say the intoxicated driver also rolled backward into the front of the car that stopped behind him.

The HPD officer was injured and transported to Hermann Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.

The accident shut the freeway down for several hours.

While crews were clearing the scene, police say another drunk driver went around the road block and up to the accident.

He was arrested at the scene.
