Northwest Freeway reopens after sand truck crash

HOUSTON – The Northwest Freeway (Highway 290 near Bauer) has reopened after a sand truck accident during the morning commute.

Officials said a truck that carried sand used for cement lost control and flipped on its side along Highway 290 near Bauer around 6 a.m. Friday. The entire load of sand spilled onto the freeway.

A Harris County Sheriff's deputy was driving on the freeway behind the truck when it flipped. Officials said he was unable to stop in time and his vehicle hit the truck and went under the carriage. He was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The freeway reopened around 1 p.m.
