North Loop reopens after crash with 18-wheeler

HOUSTON – All lanes are back open on the North Loop after a crash involving an 18-wheeler slowed traffic for hours.

Two eastbound lanes and two westbound lanes were closed for a couple of hours Friday morning while police investigated a bad wreck on 610 and Kirkpatrick in northeast Houston.

From Sky 2, you could see the car pinned between the 18-wheeler and the inner barricade divider.

"The vehicle lost control and crossed several lanes of traffic directly in front of the 18 wheeler," said Houston poice Sgt. Bill Weher. "It was not able to stop in time, struck the vehicle, drug it for a little ways and the car ended up on the barrier wall in the center."

The driver of the car was pulled out on a stretcher by Houston firefighters, but he only suffered minor injuries.

"He was coherent and functioning and able to talk to us and say what was going on," said Wehr. "It doesn't appear to be anything life threatening."

A Houston Fire Department Hazmat unit was called out to clean up a small amount of diesel fuel that leaked from the 18-wheeler.
