No recall on dog treats blamed for deaths

HOUSTON – The Food and Drug Administration has warned pet owners a popular kind of pet treats may be making dogs sick and even killing them, but so far no recall has been issued.

The FDA said it does not know scientifically what's making the dogs sick, just that there is some sort of relation between the dogs getting sick and the chicken jerky products from China.

Krystal Wilkerson, a pet owner, said she had no idea she was exposing her dogs to possible poisoning when she gave them the snacks. But now two of her Chihuahuas have died.

Veterinarian Dr. Ben Tharp suggested buying American-made treats. He said in the cases he'd heard about, dogs usually had some kind of kidney failure, but by the time pet owners realized something was wrong, it was too late.
