Newsmakers Nov. 6: Election final stretch, MD Anderson turns 75

HOUSTON – What more could happen in these final days before the election? Mark Jones, Ph.D. Fellow in Political Science at the Baker Institute at Rice University, said while the election may be close in other parts of the country, Texas is not one of the places Hillary Clinton can hope for a win.

"This cycle it's a dream," Jones said. "There's no way whatsoever that Hillary Clinton's going to win Texas this cycle. Now she could close it within 2 to 3 points as some polls predict. I would project a Trump victory along the lines of the high single digits of 8 to 9 percent”

Houston City Council Member Dwight Boykins, District D, is a guest this week and weighed in on why he voted no on Proposition 1 in Harris County that calls for Houston ISD to send millions to the state coffers.

"We cannot afford to send the state $160 million to distribute around the state of Texas," Boykins said. "I understand there are other schools. They can tax in their areas."

Boykins said the process used by the state needs to be changed and that voting, 'No,' may help make that happen.

Both men agree that there will be big challenges to whoever wins because of the divisiveness of this election season. Also talked about this week on Houston Newsmakers with Khambrel Marshall is the impact on down ballot races such as the Harris County District Attorney and Sheriff races, HISD's Proposition 1 and the Heights residents vote on whether or not beer and wine will be allowed to be sold in their community.
