New app helps women form friendships with other women

When you're best friend isn't down for soul cycling, don't worry — there's an app for that.

VINA is a mobile application that helps women form new friendships with other women. It uses information collected from Facebook and in-app quizzes to match users with potential friends.

Olivia June Poole and Jen Aprahamian came up with the idea after realizing how difficult it can be to find other women with shared interest and build a connection with them.

The friend-matching app is accessible through Facebook, which confirms the user's identity and adds a natural-element to the experience. VINA uses your Facebook network to match you with possible friends. The setup process starts with a six-question quiz designed to understand your personality. Users can also use a profile section to add more personalized self-descriptions.

Once the app finds a match, the two users can message each other. In some cases, the app will recommend activities to users based on the information in their profiles and quizzes. Unlike popular matching apps such as Tinder and Grindr, VINA doesn't pair women by photo, and instead relies on a matching algorithm that uses mutual friends, location and quiz data.
