5 people detained after stolen ATM recovered at Humble home

It was a different kind of money withdrawal Monday morning on Farm to Market Road 1960 just east of Highway 59 in Humble.

Police said thieves drove a stolen car into the building, jumped out, stole an ATM and took off. But they said an observant wrecker was driving by, saw the ATM, headed down the street and followed it to a house on Vailview Drive, not far away.

"Usually they go to different areas," said Humble Police Sgt. Mike Flynt. "Depends on where the person and where they're going to take it trying -- it takes a little while to get into the machines. So they have to get it somewhere they feel secure to do so."

Police detained five people inside. Officers said the five were not cooperative. Police said they got a search warrant and went inside and found one man apparently trying to hide in an attic.

"I just know before we made entry, we heard a loud thunk and then the Sheetrock and the hole in the ceiling," Flynt said. "So he came down to meet us."

Police said they also found a stolen ATM inside the house. A different wrecker loaded it up and carried it to the police station for processing. Police were also checking out that stolen car and checking to see if the suspects in this case are to blame for other stolen ATMs.

"That we don't know. We just have to coordinate with other agencies and see if anything matches up with any of the suspects we've detained," Flynt said.
Humble police say their investigation will determine how many people face charges.
