HOUSTON – Residents in one neighborhood are on edge after a baby girl was fatally wounded in a drive-by shooting.
The shooting happened early Sunday morning on Ponnell Lane and De Walt in northwest Houston.
"I think that was a tragedy. Three in the morning, mostly everybody's sleeping. We heard all the noise," resident Vickie Pringle said.
But neighbors said they know better than to walk outside when they hear gunshots, especially in the middle of the night.
Houston police said two men wearing hoods, one of them wielding a rifle, walked up to a parked car and began shooting.
Inside the car, was a baby girl named Forever Donatto, her mother, and at least two other people, investigators said.
Moments later, investigators said a dark-colored SUV came along and someone inside pumped more bullets into the car.
The only one hit was Forever, who was sitting in her car seat.
Desperately looking for help, the mother ran down the street. Resident Jon Richardson tried to help.
"I went and grabbed the baby, put some towels on it and try and look for the holes ... so we could stop the bleeding," he said.
Forever later died at Texas Children's Hospital.
The gunmen got away. Descriptions of them have not been released.
The motive for the shooting has not been released.
