Joint Base Andrews on lockdown after reports of active shooter

CAMP SPRINGS, Maryland – Officials have given the all- clear and the lockdown has been lifted at Joint Base Andrews in Camp Springs after a reports of an active shooter Thursday were found to be a mistake.

According to a public information officer in the Washington office, the reason for the mix up stemmed from confusion over reports of a drill and an actual incident. The FBI field offices let security on Joint Base Andrews sort out the confusion.

The base was placed on lockdown just after 8 a.m. All personnel were instructed to shelter in place.

The incident was reported at the Malcolm Grow Medical Facility where first responders were on the scene. 

According to JBA officials, an 8 a.m.  active shooter exercise was planned on the base. During the drill, an actual shooter was reported at the medical building.

Capital Hill reporter for Stars and Stripes Travis Tritten reported that the shooter was barricaded on the third-floor of building 1060.

Officials said no shooter was found.

Emergency vehicles with lights on but no sirens were in the area of a military base.

At least three people in camouflage and helmets could be seen walking working dogs around the three-story medical building. The base is home to Air Force One and is about 20 miles outside Washington.

In May, the base was on lockdown after a woman walked onto the campus claiming she had a bomb.

She was arrested and no bomb was found, NBC News4 reported.
