Cars crash into building; Pregnant woman dies

HOUSTON – Only two hours into the new year, police rushed to the scene of a violent crash along the southbound side of Beltway 8 West near Hammerly Boulevard on Thursday.

Investigators say a woman was behind the wheel of a Dodge pickup truck and her boyfriend was driving a Cadillac when both cars ended up inside a building.

The woman involved in the accident was pronounced dead by the Harris County Medical Examiner's Office Thursday afternoon.

"Initial reports is that they were boyfriend and girlfriend and that they were possibly following each other," Sgt. J.D. Rossman, with the Houston Police Department, said. "They may have had a disturbance."

Police say that disturbance led to a rapid chase down the feeder road. The two drivers lost control, veered off the slick roadway and collided.

"When the female hit the building, she was ejected and (later was) transported to Hermann Memorial Hospital," Rossman said. "She does have traumatic brain injury at this time. She was also 25 weeks pregnant. The baby was delivered and is in the intensive care unit right now."

Officers say the man involved in the accident was wearing his seat belt. According to police, he may have been drinking before he got behind the wheel.
