HOUSTON – Felony charges have been filed against the mother and aunt of a 1-year-old girl after police reported the child was found suffering alcohol poisoning.
Police said they were called to the Inwood Village complex on TC Jester near Antoine in February after the child's grandmother and father dialed 911 to report the little girl was vomiting, shivering and her eyes were rolling back in her head.
Police also said the 23-month-old had a strong odor of alcohol.
According to police, the child was then rushed to the hospital and found to have a blood-alcohol level of .268. This amount is more than triple the limit of alcohol an adult is allowed to have in their system while driving.
Police said shortly before family members dialed 911 the little girl was dropped off at the complex after spending time with her mother, 17-year-old Shadreon Jefferson and her aunt, 25-year-old Shamara Batiste.
Police said Batiste later admitted the little girl drank half of her beverage, which was the equivalent of six Vodka shots. Police also noted that Batiste "laughed when speaking about the complainant consuming alcohol."
Both Jefferson and Batiste have been charged with felony child endangerment. Officials with Children's Protective Service said the child, along with two other children, have been placed with a relative while the agency conducts an investigation.
Jefferson appeared before a judge Wednesday morning to face a charge of endangering a child.
