More victims of alleged child sex predator come forward

William James Vahey (2013)

HOUSTON – The FBI tells Local 2 Investigates agents are receiving many tips and learning about more suspected victims of an international schools teacher thought to have molested more than 90 young men.

"It's hard to put a number on victims because I think this is only the beginning. It is now reaching abroad and so I think the next few weeks we are going to continue to have a large volume of response," FBI Special Agent Shauna Dunlap told Local 2.

The suspect, William James Vahey, of South Carolina, killed himself after learning the FBI was investigating him. Vahey is not from Houston, but Dunlap says it is possible he had contacts with children of Houston-area families while they lived overseas. Vahey taught at American schools in various countries since the 1970s.

Local 2 Investigative reporter Jace Larson broke news of the investigation Tuesday. Several people have since come forward to Local 2 also saying they were molested by Vahey at various schools around the world.

The Houston FBI was called in to investigate images that FBI agents think show Vahey molesting 90 boys since 2008. Agents think he could have been molesting children since the 1970s when he was convicted of child molestation in California.

"We're hearing that folks are shocked. People are concerned. Folks are wanting to help us. We are going to do the best we can to do a thorough investigation," Dunlap said.

Even though Vahey killed himself, agents want to make sure no one else was involved.

"Just because this specific individual chose not to face justice, doesn't mean we are going to stop," she said.

Vahey, who was 64, has taught in Nicaragua; London, England,; Caracas, Venezuela; Jakarta, Indonesia; Dhahran, Saudi Arabia; Athens, Greece; Ahwaz and Tehran, Iran; Madrid, Spain, and Beirut, Lebanon.

Dunlap says records show he taught at the Saudi Aramco School in Saudi Arabia from 1980-1992. Saudi Aramco has a division located in the Houston area and Dunlap says children from Texas may have attended that school while their parents worked in Saudi Arabia.

"We want to help these victims, if it's needed. We want to help them bring closure for the horrific acts," she said.
