HOUSTON -

The effects of health code violations discovered by inspectors at a popular Houston bread maker reach far past just that one company.

That's because Slow Dough Bread Co. supplies bread to some of Houston's best restaurants, Whole Foods and Revival Market in the Heights. Customers rave online, writing "Best bread ever" and "seriously delicious bread." But what inspectors discovered at its commissary at 8728 Westpark is seriously disgusting.

Inspectors closed the place temporarily citing "roaches in the dough prep area" and dried-out rodent remains on a glue trap in the same area.

"I'm wondering how something like that stays there that long in the area where you guys are making the dough without anybody seeing it, long enough to start drying out," Local 2 asked an employee.

"Every night at the end of the shift, they all clean the floors and everything," said the man, helping to translate for a Spanish-speaking Slow Dough Bread Co. supervisor. "So basically they didn't detect no smells or anything,  because they clean every night."

After we stopped by, a representative of Slow Dough Bread Co. emailed us. He said the deceased rodent was in the wall and was discovered when they removed the wall panel for repair.

"As part of industry standard preventive pest control maintenance, we have traps in the drop ceiling," wrote Clayton Garrett. "We assume that the trap fell down inside the wall. The wall in question, which separates production and our office space, was classified as dough prep/forming area by the inspector and thus, the report."

Garrett said they took immediate action by repairing and sealing the wall.

Inspectors say there were more cockroaches at Epicurean Express at 2018 Rusk and General Joe's Chopstix at 11566 Gulf Freeway near Almeda Genoa.

They wrote up Sagar Indian Cuisine at 5600 Hillcroft for the second time in a month for roaches.

Inspectors condemned 55 pounds of food at El Rancherito Taqueria at 6818 Chetwood because it was off temperature.

Flies buzzing around the TGI Friday's at 7728 West FM1960 West and Brenner's on the Bayou at 1 Birdsall Street got both places written up.

We've got A+s this week for Berryhill at 2639 Revere and Napoli Pizza at 5266 Beechnut. Congratulations to both restaurants for passing their latest health inspections with flying colors.
