We spend about a third of our lives sleeping. It's why finding the right mattress is so important. But with so many options out there -- foam, springs or Tempurpedic -- the decision can be daunting. Consumer Expert Amy Davis shows you how a new high-tech device can help you find the ideal mattress for your body.
Like millions of people Kyle Oldham suffers from neck and back pain. It's why she's desperate to find a new mattress.
"I feel pain every morning and it sometimes rears its ugly head when I lay down at night," said Oldham.
When it comes to mattresses, one size definitely does not fit all. Ultimately the choice depends your condition, your shape and your preference. But one high-tech way that may help is called Bed Match.
It's a computerized diagnostic system that determines which mattress is best for you based on your answers to a series of questions, and your body measurements taken on a diagnostic mattress set up in retail showrooms.
Bed Match told Davis she needed a medium firm mattress.
There are four basic types of mattresses. The least expensive is made of springs, foam or coils. It may be firm, but the firmness usually doesn't last.
"Over the course of the years it wears down and actually compacts and your mattress is not going to feel as what it did when you first purchased it," said Ben Volotzky of Beds Unlimited.
There are air mattresses like Sleep Number where each partner can adjust the firmness on his or her side of the bed. The third type is Tempurpedic, made of a material that's pliable and giving. These beds are comfortable, but Tempurpedics may make it difficult for people with painful conditions to turn. On the other hand, Latex is often recommended for people in pain.
"Latex lifts where other mattresses fall," explained Volotzky. "It's easy to toss and turn at night if you need that movement."
Some people say latex is also cool and may be allergy free.
