HOUSTON -

There are plenty of things for you and the family to do this weekend that won't cost a dime.

The 25th annual Hempstead Watermelon Festival kicks off with a car parade at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. There's a watermelon cake contest, a watermelon eating contest and lots of games for the whole family.

If you're into eating healthy, check out VegFest Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Pershing Middle School. The free day features vegan cuisine, activities for kids, yoga and fitness demonstrations, food demos and prizes.

Catch a live performance of "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" Saturday or Sunday night at the Miller Outdoor Theater at 8:15 p.m. Ain't nothing dirty goin' on, unless you're sitting on the hill and it's been raining. But those seats are always free.

Saturday night from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., head to the Third Ward for Project Row House's Community Night Market. The free monthly event features community performances, live music, craft activities, unique arts and crafts and food.
