Mom of slain baby wants answers

HOUSTON – The mother of a baby girl that was killed in a drive-by shooting is pleading for justice.

Forever Donnato, 11 months, was fatally wounded on Ponnel Lane near Ellington Street about 3 a.m. on Aug. 19.

"My baby didn't even get a chance to see her first birthday, her first Halloween or her first Christmas," mother Canndus Lewis said. "I just want justice to be brought."

"The men fled after not being able to get into the house," said Sgt. Ryan Chandler with HPD Homicide. "After they fled, we believe these same two men came back to the house and committed a drive-by shooting."

According to detectives, the shooters used crowbars to get past burglar bars, but left when they realized the homeowner was inside and armed.

Minutes later, a car carrying four adults and Forever pulled into the driveway of the home.

"Right as they pull in, the dark colored SUV drives by and fires several shots," Chandler said.

There were only a few witnesses, and Lewis hopes someone will speak up.

"We're calling on every member of our community to turn over this cold-blooded killer who killed this beautiful little baby," community activist Quanell X said. "There's no room, no safe haven, in our community for a baby killer."

Lewis said the past month has been torture for her, knowing her daughter is gone and the killers are still free.

"Right now I'm her voice," Lewis said. "She don't have one because y'all took that away from her. I just want y'all to turn yourselves in, or if y'all know something, say something.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
