A mother is in custody and her boyfriend is still on the loose after police say they led them on a chase with a young child in the back seat.
Officers say this all started when the couple was pulled over for a traffic violation in northwest Harris County. Deputies say they were conducting a seat belt safety initiative and pulled over the driver at Highway 249 and Grant Road.
Deputies tell us when the 28-year-old driver rolled down the window the officer noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the car. At that point, the officer had no idea that a 3-year-old girl was strapped into her car seat in the back of that car.
Deputies tell us the officer instructed the driver to step out of the car, but that's when the driver sped off and led authorities on a chase at speeds of up to 60 mph down FM 1960.
Before this chase came to a crashing end, the driver hit two vehicles, including a car with a woman and child inside.
The chase ended in a parking lot when the driver bailed out of the car and ran across the street into an apartment complex.
"Went back to the vehicle where the mother was, at that time, the female suspect had gotten the car and drove off. She drove right over here and the vehicle that you see loaded on this wrecker was abandoned and she was later found walking down the road with a child," a deputy told Local 2.
Authorities tell us that the mother and her child were found walking down FM 1960. That's when deputies picked her up and took her into custody.
The 3-year-old is safe after the child was picked up by a relative at the scene.
Authorities tell us that both the mom and her boyfriend have outstanding warrants and the officer who initially pulled over the driver found a marijuana roach inside the car.
Deputies say they know who the boyfriend is and that they have called off the search for him.
