HUMBLE, Texas - Family and friends of a missing woman gathered Sunday night for a candlelight vigil, hours after a body was found.
Amber Elkins, 20, was last seen alive on July 24. Her vehicle was found abandoned on Tuesday, and a lot of blood was inside it.
Texas EquuSearch volunteers discovered the body in an area along Gene Campbell Road near F.M. 1314 in Montgomery County.
The body hasn't been positively identified yet and an autopsy is being performed to determine a cause of death, but Tim Miller, the founder of EquuSearch, said the body is that of a woman.
"It was dumped in an isolated area," said Miller.
Miller said his team was searching the area after receiving some information from detectives. Their focus was on the woods near some cell towers.
"So, we just had our people out there, just concentrating on areas around these cell towers that we had information on," said Miller.
Elkins' father, Mike Elkins, flew in from Georgia on Friday to help in the search. At the vigil, he told everyone his daughter was an angel.
"She always felt sorry for the less fortunate, and I really believe that's what caused this," Mike Elkins said.
Mike Elkins said his daughter got involved with James David Clarke, and he believes Clarke took advantage of her.
Clarke was arrested Saturday and charged with murder.
"I'm doing everything and praying to forgive him," Mike Elkins said. "Not for him, for me."
The man who found Amber Elkins' vehicle on Homestead Road, Tommy Johnson, called sheriff's deputies because he noticed the front passenger window was broken out and there was a lot of blood inside.
"Her purse and stuff like that was thrown all over the place," said Johnson. "Blood was on the seat, the console, the shifters and on the sides of the driver seat."
Elkins' family said they feared the worst from the very beginning because Amber would never go that long without letting someone know where she was.
Family members said Elkins had a 9-month-old daughter whom she loved very much.
The baby is with her father, Frank Ferrata, who told reporters he and Amber lived together in Midway, Texas, and that she moved back to Humble about a month ago.
Elkins' mother said her daughter had been involved with Clarke for about a month.
Investigators said Clarke has a criminal history that includes arrests on charges of robbery, car theft, assault and drugs. He is due in court on Monday.
