Military veteran needs help after rat infestation

BAYTOWN, Texas – Critter Control of Houston is seeking help from the community to clean up a war veteran's home that is infested by rats.

William Lloyd, 81, is a Korean War veteran. He and his wife called Critter Control on Tuesday, saying they had a rat problem in their Baytown home. When Critter Control crews arrived, they found a rat infestation.

"It's the worst rat infestation that I have ever encountered in a home that actually has people living in it right now," said Larrisa Cardenas of Critter Control.

Lloyd, who is disabled and unable to get around much, said the problem started about a year ago and it continued getting worse.

"They started climbing up the chimney and getting up somehow in the attic and now they've started coming in through the sheet rock," Lloyd said.

Cardenas says they have found hundreds of rats inside the home.

"I found a rat nest underneath two different coffee tables and a rat nest under one of the arm chairs," Cardenas said.

There is also feces all over the house, which Lloyd has lived in for more than 30 years.

"I figured maybe they'd eventually leave, but they don't," Lloyd said. "They just hang in here."

The problem is so bad, Critter Control is now calling on members of the community to help.

"This is not what I would want for my family and so we have to help these people," Cardenas said.

They are asking for carpenters and electricians to come forward and offer their services. They are also asking for furniture donations, since termites have eaten through much of the furniture.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help with the repairs.
