Mickey Gilley reveals what new venue will include

Gilley expects place to take about 2 years to build

LA PORTE, Texas – Mickey Gilley sat down with Channel 2 News and in an exclusive interview revealed for the first time what the new venue will include.

The original Gilley's was a honkey-tonk bar in Pasadena. It exploded in popularity after providing the backdrop for the movie, "Urban Cowboy."

"We're trying to make the new entrance look like the old nightclub with the old sign that we had at the front," said Gilley. "People can come and take pictures and reminisce about the time John Travolta came and filmed 'Urban Cowboy.'"

And what about the mechanical bull made famous? Gilley said there will be one for the adults and more.

"I'd like to see a small, little mechanical bull for the kids to ride," Gilley said.

The La Porte City Council approved the development of the new Gilley's venue. The planning and zoning commission approved the proposal back in December.

Now that it's approved, the new Gilley's would go up along Highway 146 between West Fairmont Parkway and Wharton Weems.

It's still unclear when construction will begin on the new facility but once it does, Gilley expects the place to take about two years to build.

"I'd like to have something I can be proud of. I'm trying to get it built before I pass. I'm fixing to be 80 years old. I ain't got much time left," he said with a chuckle.
