METRO responds after blind man falls from train in downtown

HOUSTON – It was newly released surveillance video showing a blind man taking a nasty fall from a METRO train.

The fall left Oscar Pavon with bumps and bruises, even broken teeth.

Captured on May 18, the video showed the train stopping on Capitol near Caroline, which is an area without a platform.

The doors opened, but before they closed again, Pavon was already walking through. He fell to the street and sidewalk below.

The train engineer and other passengers helped him up and back into the train.

Someone even told him it’s his own fault.

METRO sent Channel 2 News a statement on Friday:

“METRO has completed the review of an incident that occurred on one of our trains on Thursday, May 18, 2017. Before pulling into a rail station, the rail operator inadvertently opened the train doors and immediately attempted to close them, but by then, the gentleman had made his way through the train doors and fell.

"After the fall, the operator and other patrons came to the man's aid. This incident, while highly unusual, will be used as a learning tool. The safety of our customers is of the highest priority.”

Pavon had a message for METRO:

"Just to help me with my health. Find out what's wrong with my leg,” said Pavon. "I hit my leg real hard and it bled.  And my back felt like I was getting stabbed in the back, like they laid hot iron on my back. "

Pavon said METRO offered him a settlement, but he's considering his options.
