LA MARQUE, Texas – A member of La Marque's City Council is defending controversial comments she made about black people.
Connie Trube's remarks were recorded by the husband of a political adversary several weeks ago during an early voting period.
The recordings are available here, and numerous voices are heard on three recordings. About five people took part in the conversation, including the man who recorded them, James Bethea, according to Trube.
Bethea's wife ran for a La Marque City Council position and lost, although not to Connie Trube.
The couple have filed an official complaint with the U.S. Attorney's Office. The Betheas allege that the controversial remarks by Trube and other members of city government create an environment that violates the civil rights of citizens.
"She got on the school board with the rest of the blacks and they all just ganged up and that's why the school system has gone to hell," Trube is heard saying on the recording.
The two-term City Council person acknowledges she made the remark.
"Those are your words?" Local 2 Investigates, Joel Eisenbaum, asked.
"Yes they are and all you have to do is see the condition the school district is in right now," Trube said.
"Is that a black-white issue?" Eisenbaum said.
"I think so," Trube said.
LaMarque's City Council will discuss the legal ramifications of the recordings and remarks during a closed-door executive session Monday night.
