Medical students find out where they'll spend residency

HOUSTON – It was an emotional day at Baylor College of Medicine as students learned where they will spend the next several years of their lives.

Almost 200 seniors were both excited and nervous about the letter with their names, tucked away inside an envelope .

"I am just ready to know where I am going to be living for the next four years," said Patrick Smollen.

The students at Baylor competed with schools around the country for spots in residency programs throughout the United States.

For Charity Milles, it was something like winning the lottery.

"I am really excited and thankful that I got my first choice. I am relieved, I probably don't have as much packing to do as some of my other classmates because I am staying here in Houston," said Milles.

She's not the only one who's happy about her staying at home, her mother said she's just as excited if not more.

"I am so excited, I prayed really hard that she would match here because she is still my baby," said Demetria Wallace

Wallace said this has been her daughter's dream ever since she was a little girl.

"She has known probably since she was 6 years old that she wanted to be a doctor, and now it's finally all coming together," Wallace said.

In all, about 42 students will do their residency at Baylor, while the others are headed to programs across the country to begin the next chapter of their medical careers.
