HOUSTON -

Mayor Annise Parker joined BARC Animal Shelter and Adoption and new pet families on Wednesday to celebrate the mayor's Pets of the Week.

So far, more than 90 have been featured by Mayor Parker since the inception of the program in August 2012.

"I'm passionate about BARC and the positive impact its leadership and staff have had on the lives of Houston's homeless animals over the last few years," Mayor Parker said.

"It's no small task to run an organization that cannot turn away a single dog or cat that comes through its doors in the country's fourth largest city, but they do it every day," she said.

As of the second week in July, nearly 100 percent of the Pets of the Week were either adopted or transferred to a rescue group.
