A mass was held Sunday at the Co-Cathedral Sacred Heart to honor firefighters whose lives have been lost in the line of duty.
"When I think about the four firefighters we lost this past year, it makes me emotional," said one attendee. "I will never forget and I can tell you all of the other firefighters will never forget."
For Mary Sullivan, this is the first time she has attended the annual mass. She says the beauty of the day and the beauty of the ceremony matched the beauty of her daughter Ann Sullivan.
"I understand why it meant so much to Ann to be a fire fighter because of the family spirit and the camaraderie among them, and now I'm part of that family," said Mary.
Ann was just 24 years old when she was killed in a motel fire off 59th and Hillcroft. Three other firemen also lost their lives fighting that massive blaze.
"This is what she wanted to do, and what she was born to do, and sadly, to die to do," Mary said.
With the American flag lifted high, families say it serves as a reminder of the sacrifice each woman and man makes when they put on the uniform.
"It just reminds us that God is always with us, and now and Bobby and Robert and Mathew are with God."
