Man tries to steal baby from mom

HOUSTON – A southeast Houston mother got the scare of a lifetime when a man tried to steal her baby from her arms Monday.

The mother of three had just finished dropping off her husband at work when she pulled into the Indigo Falls apartments in the 10900 block of the Gulf Freeway and was stopped by the suspect at 8 a.m.

The woman said a man approached her Jeep and demanded her 3-month-old baby.

"The man just came to take her baby and she was pulling the baby out (of the Jeep)," said Nancy Cardans, the victim's cousin.

But the mother said she would not let go of the baby, even though the man was yanking the child's legs and pulling the baby back and forth.

"(He was) pulling like, 'Gimme me the baby.' She didn't want to give the baby, so he took a gun out," Cardans said.

Even with the gun pointed at her, the mother refused to let go.

"She said, 'No.' She started crying and her purse fell down," Cardans said.

When her purse fell on the ground, $300 fell out. Police said the man grabbed the money and ran.

The mom and her baby were checked out at a hospital. Doctors said they were OK.

The suspect was only described as a black man between 20 and 30 years old, 5 feet 10 to 5 feet 11 inches tall, skinny, with braided hair.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
