Family finds body of missing man on shore in San Luis Pass

Man swept out to sea in Galveston while attempting to save woman

GALVESTON, Texas – The body of a man who was swept out to sea in Galveston trying to rescue a woman was found Monday by a family member, the Coast Guard said.

Stephen Espedal, 37, was located in the water by the shore, near where he went missing in San Luis Pass around 8 a.m.

Coast Guard officials said a woman was reportedly swept out to sea Sunday along with several others, including Espedal, who attempted to rescue the woman.

Officials said the woman was able to make it to shore and a good Samaritan in a boat rescued two others, but Espedal was not found.

The Coast Guard and several other law enforcement agencies searched through the night for Espedal who went missing Sunday in San Luis Pass, between Freeport and Galveston, but could not find him.
