Car found short distance away, deputies say

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – An unknown man stole a woman's car Monday night at a 7-Eleven gas station in Pompano Beach after the woman left her car running outside the convenience store with her 1-year-old son inside, authorities said.

The 24-year-old woman told Broward sheriff's deputies that she left her 2016 Toyota Camry running outside the store at 2391 N. Dixie Highway and her son was sitting in his car seat.

When the woman left the store, she saw a black or Hispanic man driving away with her son, an incident report said.

Deputies said the man was last seen heading south on Dixie Highway. The car was found a short time later in the middle of the road in the 1500 block of Northwest Second Avenue.

Deputies said the car was running and the boy was still in his car seat. They said the boy was checked out and did not appear to be harmed.

According to the report, the mother of the boy was so hysterical while talking to a deputy that she was taken to North Broward Medical Center for treatment.

The boy was turned over to his father.

Deputies established a perimeter in hopes of finding the person who drove off with the car, but no one was taken into custody.

Anyone with information is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
