Man, 81, stabbed multiple times in north Houston

HOUSTON – A man is in the hospital Friday after police said he was stabbed four times.

Investigators said Refugio Espinoza Sanchez, 81, was walking home at 10:50 p.m. in the 6300 block of Gay and Melbourne Streets when a man with a knife stabbed him twice in the chest and twice in the back as he approached his home.

Police said Sanchez was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital in an unknown condition.

Neighbor Maria Gutierrez said she has lived on the street for 40 years and never heard of anything like this.

"It's kind of scary because that person may be on the loose, you don't know," Gutierrez said.

Gutierrez said she lives across the street from Sanchez and would always see him walking home late at night from the metro bus. She said she worries about the foot traffic that comes through the neighborhood because of the Metrorail.

"Different people get off the metro, walk the streets, so that's kind of scary," Gutierrez said.

Neighbors told KPRC that Sanchez rarely had visitors.

No arrests have been made. Investigators will review surveillance cameras for a possible suspect.

Anyone with information is asked to contact HPD or Crime Stoppers.
