Man shot multiple times during burglary in NE Houston

HOUSTON – A man shot multiple times is recovering at Ben Taub Hospital after he was the victim of a burglary at the home he was remodeling.

It happened on Rietta Street at Sandra in northeast Houston at 3:55 p.m Saturday.

The victim told police two men tried to steal tools he was using  and likely didn't expect anyone to be home when they broke in. He man said the thieves also tried to steal his truck.

"They shot him twice once in his chin and the second in his stomach,” the victim’s wife said.

The man said he has had people steal from him twice before but it is the first time he has been shot.

No one lived at the home, neighbors said.

Yolanda Linares, a mother of four who lives across the street knows the victim.

“He's a good guy, hard working. He comes on his spare time to try and fix it up. We talked to him and he said he wanted to make some extra money for his family,” Linares said.

Liners says crime in her area near Tidwell and Lockwood is out of control.

“There's times at night where are you inside sleeping and there's gun shots,” she said.

The Houston Police Department's crime mapping tool online shows 14 burglaries within about 3 miles in the past 30 days.

“We're hardworking people. All we want to do is raise our kids,” Linares said.
