Man shot, killed in hotel lobby

HOUSTON – Investigators are still trying to figure out what lead up to a shooting and why a man was shot inside a busy lobby late Friday night.

Deputies said around 9:30 p.m. a man pulled up to the breezeway of the front office of a Ramada Inn on the North Freeway near North Vista Drive in a white Acura. He walked inside the lobby and got into some sort of a disturbance. Deputies said someone pulled out a gun and shot at the man several times, hitting him at least once. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The night manager was coming from the back and he had the phone to his ear and he was already telling police that someone had been shot and someone was on the floor," said Katharine Grizzard, a motel guest.

Grizzard said she saw the body when she went to the office to pay for her room.

"I still wanted to pay my rent, so I walked to the counter and saw this black man laying on the floor. His face was down into the carpet and I told my husband, 'What the hell is going on?'" said Grizzard.

She went back to her room and called 911.

Investigators said there were several people inside, including the clerk, but no one else was injured.

Deputies spent hours processing the scene, digging bullets out of the front desk. Officials detained dozens of people to check them for gun powder residue.

Detectives said they have several possible suspects in custody but still aren't sure if they have the shooter.

Investigators are still trying to figure out a motive in this case.
