Atascocita - A 16-year-old girl's birthday party ended in tragedy when one of the guests was shot multiple times.
Investigators were called out to a home on Oak Walk at Long Timber in Atascocita around 12:15 a.m. Sunday morning after receiving reports about a possible shooting.
John Heickman lives down the street and could hear the party getting rowdy. Concerned it might get out of hand, he called the cops.
"They stopped by and told them to keep it down, then they drove away. About 20 minutes later shots were fired," said Heickman.
When deputies arrived, they found an 18-year-old man who was shot multiple times in the stomach and legs.
Deputies say the argument started during the girl's sweet 16 party when a group of guys were asked to leave the party. They left but came back a little while later. That is when investigators say another young man pulled out a gun and shot the victim then fled the scene.
The 18-year-old was flown to Memorial Hermann in critical condition.
Witnesses who were at the party gave a description of the suspect's car to deputies, who later spotted the car on F.M. 1960.
Another neighbor who wanted to remain anonymous told Local 2 he looked outside of his window when he heard the arguing. That is when he saw a heavy set black man wearing a red shirt with a shot gun run around the corner just moments before the shots rang out. The neighbor said the man ran back to a gold Monte Carlo with the gun and took off.
Police caught up with that car and took several people in custody. They found the loaded shotgun in the car as well.
During that part of the investigation, officials confirmed the four people in the car were also at the party.
Deputies later concluded that the gun found in the car was not the one used at the shooting.
"You really don't expect this kind of thing to happen, but it did," said Heickman.
Police have not positively identified the shooter. The name of the victim was not immediately released.
The investigation is ongoing.
