Man sentenced for 1994 killing of girlfriend

HOUSTON – A Harris County jury has sentenced a man to 60 years in prison for the 1994 murder of his girlfriend.

On Monday, a jury convicted Christopher Stoernell of murder for the September 30, 1994, shooting death of 17-year-old Ruth Majewski.

According to police, Majewski had been at the home of her boyfriend at the time of the shooting.

Stoernell, also 17 at the time, told investigators that Majewski committed suicide.

After the initial investigation the case went cold and was unresolved.

In February 2012 the HCSO's Cold Case Unit reviewed the case and initiated a follow-up investigation.

Stoernell, now 38, was charged in August 2013.
