Man killed while putting air in his tires

Driver of truck lost control and slammed into him

HARRIS COUNTY – Investigators with the Harris County Sheriff's Office said the driver of a red pick up truck was likely speeding when he lost control, jumped a curb and slammed into a man who was putting air in his tires.

The crash happened at a Shell gas station on Aldine Mail Rt. near the Eastex Freeway just before 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

Charles Garley was bent down next to his car when the truck hit him.  Deputies said he died instantly.

"I'm told he was putting air in his tires and the truck jumped the curb," said Carla Hall, Garley's sister.  "His wife was in the car and was rushed to the hospital."

The extent of her injuries are unknown.  Two teens were also in the pick up truck and one of them was taken to the hospital, too.

Deputies took the driver in for questioning and were testing him for suspicion of DUI.

"I just hope and pray it was just an accident," Hall said.  "And no drugs or alcohol was involved."

Hall told Local 2 her brother was kind, thoughtful and he loved to cook.

"He was always calling me, asking for recipes," she said.  "He liked to cook for his wife.  He was always trying to surprise her and do nice things for her."

Investigators will gather evidence and present their findings to the District Attorney's Office.
