Man killed in car next to school

HOUSTON – A man was killed in a drive-by shooting next to a southeast Houston high school.

A Houston Independent School District police officer said he heard gunshots across the street from Worthing High School in the 4000 block of Wilmington Street at 7 p.m. Monday and found John Dipo Miller, 26, shot three times in the chest. Miller was in his car outside the Wilmington Apartments. Police said at least 10 shots were fired into Miller's car.

"We don't know if he was armed or not. It doesn't appear that he returned fire," said R.J. Rohling with HPD Homicide.

Edward Lemon saw the aftermath.

"A window was blown out of the driver's side," he said.

Another neighbor said he heard gunfire moments before the car window shattered.

"I heard like five or six shots," Jacoby Emerson said.

Miller was taken to Ben Taub Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators do not yet have a motive for the shooting. Miller was the father of a 5-year-old girl.

The suspect has not been caught.
