Man jumps from balcony in southwest Houston apartment fire, helps neighbors to safety

HOUSTON – Several people are out of their homes Thursday after an early morning fire at an apartment complex in southwest Houston.

Officials said a resident came home to his apartment on Crescent Park Drive near Village Place Drive around 3 a.m. When he opened the door, his apartment was on fire. He had to jump off the balcony to escape the flames, fire officials said.

The man banged on neighbors' doors to get them out of the building.

One of the neighbors was a mother with a newborn.

No one was hurt in the fire, officials said.

The extent of the damage is being determined.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
