Man hit, killed by SUV while jaywalking

HOUSTON – One man was hit and killed while crossing a street in north Harris County early Monday morning.

Harris County sheriff's deputies said the driver of an SUV hit a man, who was crossing West Mount Houston Road just west of I-45, around 4 a.m. Monday. The driver pulled over to call for help, but the victim died instantly.

Investigators closed all but one lane of West Mount Houston Road after the accident.

Deputies said they were not sure why the man had tried to cross the road in such a dark area. Officials were questioning the driver at the scene of the crash.

Authorities said there could be a lengthy investigation, while they work to determine what happened.

No charges are expected to be filed against the driver of the SUV, since the victim was not in a designated crosswalk when he was hit.
