When officers arrived, they found the body of 28-year-old Starsky Cooper on the sidewalk between the apartment office and another building.
Investigators said they have not established a motive for the shooting. No arrests have been made.
His family spoke Thursday afternoon at the Community of Faith Church in northwest Houston where he was a member.
They say Cooper recently wrote a book urging teens to stay away from gangs and violence called "Why you shouldn't want to be a gangster in America."
They ask that anyone who can help solve this case, please call the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
