HARRIS COUNTY, Texas -

The Harris County Sheriff's Office has confirmed a 53-year-old man found dead in his northwest Harris County garage suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was the victim of a homicide.

The body of Magnus "Mike" Scott Hjalmarson was discovered Saturday morning in a garage at Mariposa Apartment Homes on Ella Boulevard near Cypress Creek Parkway.

Investigators said Hjalmarson had been gathering items for a community-wide garage sale he and his wife had organized through the CARES ministry organization they led at the complex.

Neighbors reported seeing a dark-colored truck parked near the garage shortly before his body was found. They also heard a loud "bang" but didn't realize it was a gunshot.

Residents of the complex described Hjalmarson as a nice and caring man who was always helping others.

"He was a fantastic guy. He knew no color. You could call him at anytime and he would come to your aid," said resident Brenda Harley.

Sunday, neighbors told Local 2 they can't understand why anyone would have wanted to hurt Hjalmarson.

"The devil is walking around in their skin. It's just wrong. Mike never hurt anybody," said resident Deborah Strong.

Friends and neighbors said Hjalmarson moved to Houston a couple of years ago to be closer to his aging father. In Flagstaff, he had been a pastor and after he moved to Texas, he began helping out at Northwood Church. There, he did physical work and whatever else was needed.

"I think that every day he was looking for opportunities to love and care for others," said Northwood Church assistant pastor Bradley Wyatt.

Anyone with information about Hjalmarson's murder is asked to call the Harris County Sheriff's Office or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
