Man escapes burning house

HOUSTON – A southeast Houston house went up in flames Wednesday.

Emergency crews responded to the scene on Cullen Boulevard and Polk Street at around 1:30 a.m. The homeowner was inside of the house when the fire started but managed to escape.

Witnesses said the fire could be seen from several blocks away.

"When I saw the street, I said, 'Oh my God.' Halfway down the block it was," said Yolanda Chavira.

Neighbors said they were initially worried the fire would spread to nearby houses.

"I called him because he lives on this street and that's when he said, 'There's a fire out here. There's a fire out here.' He said, 'James' house is on fire, meet me halfway, I'm going over there,'" Chavira said.

It took crews about 30 minutes to get the fire under control.

No one was injured. The house was destroyed.
