Man drowns at beach in Port Bolivar Peninsula, officials say

A man died from drowning Saturday afternoon at a beach in Gilchrist, Galveston County deputies said.

The incident was reported at 1 p.m. at Port Bolivar Peninsula beach.

Deputies said a 54-year-old man, of the Dayton area, was fishing in waist deep water when he was swept under. Deputies said he was not seen until he resurfaced five minutes later.

Deputies said the victim’s friend swam out and brought him back to shore, where he began to do CPR. When EMS arrived, they began treating the man until he started breathing on his own.

The man was transported by Life Flight to UTMB.

Deputies said the man was pronounced dead at 3:45 p.m.

It is unknown if the tow or rip tide was the cause for the drowning.

The man’s identify has not been released.
