Man charged in crash that killed 1, injured 6 appears in court

HOUSTON – A man accused of swerving onto the North Freeway early Saturday and causing a crash that killed one person and injured six others appeared Tuesday in court.

Noberto Cabrera, 35, has been charged with intoxication manslaughter and intoxicated assault in connection with the crash.

According to Houston police, Cabrera was driving an SUV north on the North Freeway service road when he swerved across the grass median and onto the freeway, crashing into another SUV. Both vehicles spun, and the second SUV stopped in a median.

One of the people in the second SUV, identified as a 19-year-old woman, died at the scene. Another 19-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the second SUV, was seriously injured. Five others who were in the second SUV also treated at local hospital.

The judge denied bail for Cabrera during Tuesday's hearing. He was being held at the Harris County Jail.
