Man catches massive 964-pound shark during Texas City fishing tournament

Shark took 3 hours to reel in, tournament director says

TEXAS CITY – It took three hours and multiple people to reel in a shark caught during a Texas fishing tournament on Sunday, and rightfully so. When tournament officials weighed the shark, it weighed a whopping 964 pounds.

The catch was credited to fisherman Sergio Roque, who was competing in the Texas City / La Marque Jaycees' Tackle Time Fishing Tournament in Texas City.

The tournament director said Roque's catch is the only shark caught in the tournament so far and one of the heaviest catches in recent years.

The tournament, which runs through July 9, is the group's biggest fundraiser. Proceeds from the event go to scholarships and donations to the Texas City Independent School District. The group also supplies and cooks food for various community events.
