HOUSTON – A 68-year-old man, who pulled over to check on a pedestrian but was beaten up and carjacked for his trouble, is speaking out.
"Just right here. At the time it was bloody, real bad. There was glass stuck in there," said victim Richard Salcido.
He says he's tough as nails. At 68 years old, he takes care of his family and drives to and from his part-time job. But two weeks ago he was blind-sided by 23-year-old Emerson Parada in northwest Houston.
"He kicked me right there, right there," Salcido said.
According to police, Parada assaulted and carjacked Salcido while he was driving off Hempstead Highway near Antoine. Salcido says he had to pull over after he crossed the intersection.
"Next thing I know the glass is like boom and I said, 'Oh dear, I hit something,'" he said.
So Salcido got out, and says Parada wasn't on the ground, but he was standing with his arms crossed.
"I said,'I hit you? Are you all right?' 'You hit me.' He started getting kinda funny so I walked off and went around my car," said Salcido.
He reached down and tried to call for help, and that's when he says the suspect made a bold move and got into his car.
"And that's when he kicked me in my leg and I fell down and he just took off," said Salcido.
Salcido's daughter, Diana, told Local 2, "I can't believe they would stage it that he thought he hit a person and they took his car."
Still in shock Diana says Parada needs to understand the consequences of his actions. Parada was arrested.
Court records show Parada has a criminal record of theft, drug possession, and robbery.
He may be in jail, but Diana says she's still concerned about her father.
"It just wasn't right," she said.
The suspect was taken into custody after he was found inside of Salcido's vehicle, joyriding around town.
Parada is being held on $30,000 bond.
