Man arrested, charged in hit-and-run of 3-year-old

HOUSTON – Houston police have arrested a suspect they say fled the scene after striking a 3-year-old in north Houston.
Felipe DeJesus Leon, 35, is charged with failure to stop and render aid for the April 2 incident.

Police said Leonardo Alba was playing with his siblings in a ditch alongside Charnwood Street when he ran out into the middle of the roadway and into the path of oncoming cars.

According to police, Leon hit the boy with his car, then fled the scene.

The boy’s father says he and other family members were outside when the incident happened. He says he can’t understand why the driver didn’t stop.

“It looked like he was either dragged or rode on the hood of the car, quite, for about 150 feet down the street,” said Sgt. G.T. Hall of the Houston Police Department.

The injured child was rushed to Texas Children's Hospital with multiple broken bones and fractures.  He was treated for his injuries and released.

A neighbor’s surveillance camera captured a red four-door vehicle with tinted windows driving down the street. That vehicle was traced back to Leon, who was arrested on April 12 and charged.
