Worker falls 60 feet into hull of ship in east Harris County

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – A worker was rescued after falling several stories inside a large ship in northeast Harris County Thursday.

Officials said just after 10 a.m. the worker fell nearly 60 feet into the hull of a ship at Industrial and 3rd streets.

Channelview and Cloverleaf fire departments responded to the scene. He was removed using a Stokes basket and loaded into an ambulance.

The Cloverleaf Fire Department told KPRC 2 the worker has been identified as Jose Castorena, an employee with Tungsten.

They said he was unloading pipe when he plummeted 60 feet into the cargo hold of the ship.

Rescue teams from three different fire departments had to use ropes and pulleys to pluck Castorena head first out of a small space in the bottom of the ship.

Castorena is listed in serious condition at the hospital.
