Man arrested after police chase from SW Houston to east side
A man accused of leading police on a lunchtime chase in a stolen car is in custody.
Police say at least one robbery suspect is still at large, and there could be others. Police are questioning another suspect who led them on a high speed chase from a west side hotel. It ended about 30 minutes later when the suspect crashed the stolen car he was driving into a truck in northeast Houston.
The chase covered more than 20 miles from southwest Houston to the east side. The stolen blue Volvo SUV could be followed on traffic cameras as it sped north on the Southwest Freeway. The suspect passed our news truck with police cars trailing, just past Shepherd Drive. He left the freeway to lead police through downtown for a while, then sped east on Interstate 10.
The car was stolen hours earlier, at around 3:45 Tuesday morning from a maintenance man at the Villa De Cancun apartments near the intersection of Woodfair and Bissonnet. He says two armed men walked up to him in the parking lot, demanded his wallet, took his keys and drove off in his car.
After sunup, HPD tactical squad officers spotted the stolen SUV parked at a hotel near the intersection of the Southwest Freeway and Beltway 8.
"At 2:55 officers observed the vehicle sitting at a location known to be taken in an aggravated robbery. Suspect got into vehicle, led officers on a short pursuit, well actually not too short a pursuit, where the suspect bailed out of the vehicle and was taken into custody," said Lt. Kevin Gallier with the Houston Police Department.
The chase ended on the 610 East Loop feeder road near McCarty when the suspect drove under an 18-wheeler maneuvering to escape pursuing police.
After the crash, he tried to run, but was caught after he sprinted around a truck dealership nearby.
No injuries were reported during the chase. Officials said speeds reached at least 85 miles per hour.
The suspect, identified as Lamont Samuel Green, is being questioned now. Robbery detectives are preparing a photo lineup to see if the robbery victim can identify him.
Police aren't sure if Green was involved in the initial robbery, so at this point they can't be sure exactly how many suspects are still out there.
However, Green has been charged with evading arrest with a motor vehicle.
